2016 Most Popular Blog Posts

By far our most popular blog post of 2016 was the Definitive Guide to Concrete5 Search Engine Optimization from back in May.  But it is interesting, when looking through the analytics, to see the number of old blog posts from years past that still make it into the top 25.  Still in the top three is the 2014 SEO Rant: Concrete5 vs. Wordpress for Top Rankings in Google post.  A lot of great nuggets of information have been shared from this blog over the years.

The following are the 2016 top 5 blog posts:

1 - Definitive Guide to Concrete5 Search Engine Optimization

2 - Concrete5 eCommerce to be Available in Version 8

3 - Same Great Service, New Address

4 - Pixo to Open New Office in Park City / Midway in August 2016

5 - Concrete5 Salt Lake City Website Design/Development

A Lot to Be Thankful For in 2016

Reflecting this holiday season on the last year, we have a lot to be thankful for.  At Pixo, I have the best team of designers, SEO professionals, developers, content writers, content management specialists and social media gurus that a company founder could ask for.  We've accomplished a lot in the last year.  Opening up a new office in Utah was a big endeavor and I couldn't be more proud of how my team kept things moving.  Everyone on the Pixo team I've been working with for at least two years now and I'm very grateful for the fine work they do.

I'm also very grateful to our clients.  Not just because of the "money" side of the business, but because many, if not most, push us on a daily basis to come up with the best websites in the business.  I look at the websites we were doing just two years ago (and don't get me wrong, they were great back then) and what we are doing now and I'm proud of how we are finding new ways to increase conversions and drive new business for our clients.

It has been an amazing year and I'd like to thank everyone for making Pixo what it is today and I look forward to 2017 and the great things that are ahead of us in the coming year.

An Interesting Case Study for Social Media Buzz, Blogging & SEO

Recently I had a conversation with a very smart client about blogging for search engine optimization (SEO).  The best way to have success in attracting new clients through blogging and SEO isn't the traditional way that SEO blogs were done in the past with highly optimized content that is keyword dense.  Don't get me wrong, a good blog post needs to be on target with keywords in it, but if you want to get it to rank, particularly in competitive categories, you need to get some buzz. I'll explain the buzz more in a bit.

Case Study: How One Pixo Client's Small Online Investment Paid Big Dividens

Recently a Pixo client was looking to take their website to another level.  Problem was that they didn't know what they wanted to do and how they wanted to do it.  They just knew that if there were additional opportunities that they wanted to take advantage of them.  They were already using Pixo's Advanced Search Engine Optimization services to rank highly on Google and the other search engines for their chosen keywords.  As a matter-o-fact, they were in the top 3 positions on Google for over 27 keywords.  Their website was a bit older however and they did not have a mobile-friendly website so immediately we knew what they could do to rank even better and drive additional traffic.

What to Do When Your Website Hosting is Terminated or You Need to Recover Old Pages

I've seen it too many times before where a website owner didn't pay their hosting bill and their website was suspended or deleted, or a web designer won't give them access to their website or they accidentally deleted something on their website that they shouldn't have.  How do you recover that old website after it is gone?

Free Way to Track Website Phone Leads to Get at Your ROI

There are more sophisticated ways to do this, but if you are on a budget and need to track phone leads from your website, here is an inexpensive way of doing it.  This article shows you how to add a little javascript to your website to display different phone numbers to your users so you can track where your leads are coming from.  A pretty slick way to put together an ROI for a campaign.  Here is the code that you would add to the <head> of the page:

var current_page = document.URL; var sourceConfirm = current_page.indexOf(“?source-track”);

var phone_num=”XXX-XXX-XXXX”; if (paidConfirm != -1) { document.cookie = “Track this Source”; } else { }

var cookieCheck=document.cookie.indexOf(“Track this Source”);

if (cookieCheck != -1) { phone_num=”YYY-YYY-YYYY”; } else { }

Replace “?source-track” with whatever parameter you are using to tag the inbound link with.  Replace XXX-XXX-XXXX with your default phone number.   Replace YYY-YYY-YYYY with the variable phone number that you would like tracked.

Put the following tag where you need the phone number to display:

<script>phone_num</script>

Using Love to Build Your Business & Turn Around Organizations

Let me say from the outset that I'm not a sappy person.  I'm not afraid of a hug, but I'm not a touchy feely person.  But there is something that I've learned and thought about over the last 20 years that applies to any aspect of life and has great application in the workplace.  That is the concept of love.  If you want your business to succeed, if you want to find personal success and satisfaction there are few things that will drive that success greater than love.  Am I talking about going around and huging your employees and clients?  No (although it might not hurt).  What I am talking about is the source of your motivation and your employees motivation in building the business.

Influencer Campaigns: Not All Blogs are Created Equal

At Pixo, we have been doing influencer campaigns via mom blogs for a long time.  One thing we have found is that not all blogs are created equal.  Some of the blogs that purport to be popular will drive very few conversions.  Some moms with blogs may get invited to all of the influencer events by media outlets and are popular with corporations, but you find they have very little actual followers.  And then some blogs can drive amazing traffic to your website, business or events.

For different campaigns we've setup tracking tools to find what bloggers can actually drive results and increase sales.  One thing that we've found is that the price that a blogger asks for a post doesn't necessarily indicate the value that they can provide.  For example, milehighmamas.com was the seventh most expensive site for a campaign that we did but came in third for conversions and in total ROI came in 2nd.  This was for an influencer campaign involving 16 different websites.

Before you start a blogging influencer campaign make sure you know the players, track results and allocate dollars to the sites that can yield the best return on investment for you.

Fact: The Promise of Mobile Advertising Has Finally Arrived

I remember in 2001 when there was a lot of talk about mobile advertising and promise of being able to advertise to consumers in your local area as they were on their mobile devices.  That promise of being able to drive revenues through mobile advertising seemed to come up ever year after that and take many forms, but always seemed to fall flat.  Geolocation texting, mobile ads and mobile websites took many forms, but often weren't very consumer friendly and didn't really seem to have a large enough audience to be compelling.  One problem is that mobile devices at the time were clumsy, slow and not nearly as visually compelling as desktop browser user experience.  That started to evolve with the introduction of the iPhone, CSS3 for responsive websites and LTE mobile broadband type data speeds.

Concrete5 Ecommerce to Be Available in Version 8

Concrete5 confirmed for us today via Twitter that ecommerce that is compatible with the latest version of Concrete5 will be available in version 8 of concrete5.  In reply to a message we sent to concrete5 if a 5.7 version of ecommerce would be available, they replied, "Nope. But we are creating a Sku object in Express to join any data object to... so ecom is on the way for v8."  That is great news as many of our clients have inquired about that.

Generating 301 Redirects in an htaccess File

This is a handy little tool that I just found that helps create 301 redirects using an htaccess file.  I use it frequently for concrete5 and Wordpress sites that I'm setting up an SSL for or want to force to www URLs or non-www URLs.  This would be more for website developers than site owners, but a handy little tool.  Give it a try.

My Early Days on the Internet & Why the Internet of Today is Still Black & White Television

I was watch a show on Sunday about the history of America and they started talking about the early days of PCs and the internet.  I have a fondness for both of those eras because I lived through both of those periods and loved them.  When I was in the 4th grade I remember my cousin got an Atari 800 personal computer.  I have to admit that I loved that computer mostly because of the video games he had, but in a small way I think I also saw their potential.  In the 6th grade my dad bought me a TI 99/4A for Christmas.  He and I wouldn't have known it them, but that was the start of a fruitful career.

Creating a Link for Reviews on Google+

I just came across this handy little tool that allows you to create a link for customers to place reviews on Google+ for your company.  You used to be able to add a review parameter to the end of your Google+ page to link users to your review form, but that got changed the very end of 2015.  This handy little website however, gives you two different options to create a link to your Google+ reviews page so you can allow your customers to review of your business:

It's Wise Not to Put Your Email Address on Your Web Page

We do a fair number of rebuilds for existing websites.  Typically it means that we copy the website content over from one site to another.  Often times I'll come across pages that have an email address as part of the text on the page.  Those same individuals often wonder why they are getting a ton of spam emails to their account.  Often times they get on those spam lists because a crawler that does nothing but look for email addresses on web pages is grabbing that email address and once they have it your going to get spammed and possible get spammed a lot.

Using Alt Tags on Images for SEO in 2016

For some reason this one has come up a lot lately.  People asking how to add alt tags to images on their website for SEO purposes.  At one time it had some value.  What we tell our clients today is if you want to use Alt tags then don't put any keywords in those tags.  From Google:

"Filling alt attributes with keywords ("keyword stuffing") results in a negative user experience, and may cause your site to be perceived as spam."

The short answer is that keywords in alt tags for search engine optimization purposes has no value.  If anything it may hurt you.  The best approach would be to describe the picture without keywords in 16 words or less.
