Securely Share Passwords

Your web designer may need access to your website or hosting account to get work done. Sending a password in a regular email or text leaves a copy sitting in your message history, potentially long after the project ends.

onetimesecret.com offers a simple way to reduce that exposure: share a link that lets your designer view the password once.

How to use One-Time Secret

  1. Create a separate account for your designer whenever possible. Give them only the permissions needed for the job.

  2. Visit onetimesecret.com and enter the password you need to share.

  3. Choose an expiration time. Allow enough time for your designer to retrieve it. You can also add a passphrase for extra protection.

  4. Create the link and send it directly to your designer. If you added a passphrase, share that through a separate channel—for example, by phone if you emailed the link.

  5. Have your designer save the password in their password manager when they view it. Don’t reveal the secret yourself to test it; it’s intended for a single viewing.

According to One-Time Secret, the stored secret is deleted after it is viewed, and you can set it to expire if it goes unread.

A secure handoff is just the beginning

Treat the link as sensitive: someone who obtains it before your designer could use it, unless it’s protected by a passphrase. Deleting the secret also doesn’t change the actual account password or prevent the recipient from saving a copy.

When the work is finished, remove access that’s no longer needed or change any shared passwords. A one-time link, a dedicated account, and a little cleanup help keep your website access under control.
