We Randomly Audited 50 Utah Med Spa & Cosmetic Websites for AI Visibility and AEO Readiness: Here’s What We Found
Pixo Web Design & Strategy randomly audited 50 med spa, aesthetic and cosmetic/plastic surgery websites throughout Utah to answer an increasingly important marketing question: Are med spa and cosmetic websites ready to be found, understood and potentially recommended by AI-powered search engines such as Google AI and ChatGPT?
The results revealed a significant opportunity.
Of the 50 Utah med spa and cosmetic websites Pixo reviewed, only 42% demonstrated what we considered a strong overall AEO foundation. Another 24% were moderately prepared, while the remaining sites either had weak AEO foundations or raised website retrieval concerns during our audit.
We also found that 15 of the 50 websites—30%—raised some type of crawler or content-retrieval concern that warranted additional technical investigation.
But perhaps the most important finding wasn't technical at all.
Even many of the strongest websites were missing substantial opportunities to answer the detailed questions prospective patients are increasingly asking Google AI, ChatGPT and other AI-powered answer engines.
The majority of the market isn't fully prepared for AI search.
For Utah med spas, aesthetic providers and cosmetic surgeons, that represents an opportunity to get ahead of competitors before Answer Engine Optimization becomes as competitive as traditional SEO.
What Pixo Found Auditing 50 Utah Med Spa and Cosmetic Websites
Our random audit included practices throughout Salt Lake County, Sandy, Draper, Utah County, Davis/Weber County and St. George.
We looked beyond whether the websites were attractive.
That's particularly important in the aesthetics industry because many med spa and cosmetic websites are beautifully designed.
Instead, Pixo evaluated characteristics that help search engines and AI platforms understand a practice, including its treatments, providers, expertise, location, educational content and ability to answer the questions prospective patients actually ask.
Our key findings included:
42% had strong AEO foundations.
24% were moderately prepared for AI search.
4% were readily accessible but demonstrated weak AEO content foundations.
30% raised website retrieval or content-access concerns deserving additional investigation.
And across virtually every category, we found opportunities to provide better answers about treatment costs, candidacy, safety, recovery, alternatives, treatment comparisons, expected results and provider qualifications.
That's where the real AEO opportunity lies.
Your Next Patient May Ask AI Instead of Searching for “Med Spa Near Me”
Traditional SEO isn't disappearing.
People will continue searching Google for phrases such as:
“med spa near me”
“Botox Salt Lake City”
“lip filler Draper”
“facelift Utah”
“laser skin resurfacing near me”
Those searches remain extremely valuable.
But AI has introduced an entirely different type of search behavior.
Instead of entering three or four keywords, a prospective patient can ask:
“I'm 45 and starting to get loose skin around my jawline. Would Morpheus8, Sculptra or a facelift make the most sense?”
Or:
“What's the difference between Botox and Dysport, and which lasts longer?”
Or:
“What should I look for when choosing someone to perform lip filler?”
Or:
“Who is a qualified cosmetic surgeon in Utah who specializes in facelifts?”
Those are fundamentally different searches.
Google itself says people using AI search are asking “longer and more specific questions” and using follow-up questions to explore subjects in greater depth.
That makes the aesthetics industry particularly well suited for Answer Engine Optimization.
Med Spa Patients Have Hundreds of Questions AI Can Answer
Consider someone thinking about Botox.
The traditional SEO opportunity might be:
Botox Draper Utah
But before booking, that same patient might ask:
-
Botox vs. Dysport: what's the difference?
-
How many units of Botox will I need?
-
How much should Botox cost?
-
At what age should I start Botox?
-
How long does Botox last?
-
Can Botox make my eyebrows droop?
-
How soon after Botox can I exercise?
-
What should I avoid after Botox?
-
Who should administer Botox?
-
How do I know if my injector is qualified?
That's ten potential search opportunities surrounding just one treatment.
Now multiply that across:
Dysport
Daxxify
Lip filler
Sculptra
Microneedling
Morpheus8
IPL
Laser resurfacing
Chemical peels
Body contouring
Medical weight loss
Skin tightening
The potential AEO search universe becomes enormous.
Cosmetic Surgery Has an Even Longer Research Journey
The opportunity may be even greater for cosmetic and plastic surgeons because patients frequently spend weeks or months researching a procedure.
Someone considering a facelift may ask:
Am I too young for a facelift?
Facelift vs. neck lift: what's the difference?
What is a deep-plane facelift?
How long does facelift recovery take?
When can I return to work after a facelift?
How long will the results last?
What qualifications should a facelift surgeon have?
Who specializes in facelifts in Utah?
The same pattern occurs with breast augmentation, tummy tucks, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, liposuction and mommy makeovers.
These aren't casual purchases.
Patients want information before trusting a provider with their appearance, health and thousands of dollars.
AI is increasingly positioned between the patient's first question and the practice they ultimately choose.
AEO helps position your practice to participate in that conversation.
A Beautiful Website Isn't Necessarily an AI-Optimized Website
This was one of the most important observations from Pixo's audit.
The aesthetics industry has some exceptional websites.
They're polished. They're modern. They're filled with beautiful photography and videos. They have online booking, treatment menus, before-and-after galleries and compelling branding.
But AI doesn't choose sources simply because the website looks expensive.
An AI system needs information.
Suppose your website says:
Sculptra
Restore your youthful appearance with Sculptra. Schedule your consultation today.
Compare that with a practice whose website thoroughly explains:
What Sculptra does.
Who makes a good candidate.
Who shouldn't receive it.
How Sculptra differs from traditional filler.
How many treatments patients typically receive.
When results appear.
How long results can last.
What recovery is like.
Who performs the treatment.
What qualifications that provider has.
Which questions patients should ask before treatment.
The second website provides substantially more information an answer engine can potentially use.
That's the difference between simply advertising a treatment and establishing authority around it.
AI Search Makes Your Providers More Important
This may be one of the biggest missed opportunities Pixo found.
A med spa may employ an exceptionally experienced physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, registered nurse or aesthetic injector.
That provider may have years of experience and advanced training.
They may have performed thousands of procedures.
They may train other injectors.
Yet the website might give that person a photograph and a two-paragraph biography.
That's a lost digital marketing opportunity.
Your providers are part of what differentiates your practice from hundreds of competitors offering Botox and filler.
A strong AEO strategy helps clearly establish:
Who your providers are.
Their professional qualifications.
Their areas of expertise.
Which treatments they specialize in.
Their experience.
Their approach to treatment.
The questions they're uniquely qualified to answer.
AI visibility isn't just about creating more content.
It's about establishing why your practice deserves to be considered an authoritative source.
Google Is Already Telling Businesses to Prepare for AI Search
AI search isn't a hypothetical future trend.
Google has incorporated AI Overviews and AI Mode into its search experience and has published guidance specifically addressing how website owners can succeed in AI-powered search.
Importantly, Google continues to emphasize valuable, original content and says traditional SEO best practices remain relevant.
That's why Pixo doesn't view AEO as a replacement for SEO.
SEO helps your website rank. AEO expands that strategy by helping your business become understandable and useful to AI-powered answer engines.
Businesses increasingly need both.
ChatGPT Can Search, Cite and Link to Websites
Google isn't the only reason businesses should be thinking about AI visibility.
ChatGPT can search the web and cite the websites it uses to answer questions.
OpenAI specifically advises website owners that allowing its search crawler can help their content be “discovered, surfaced, and clearly cited and linked” in ChatGPT search.
That creates a new competitive environment.
Imagine someone asking:
“What is the safest way to choose a Botox injector near Salt Lake City?”
ChatGPT can explain what qualifications to look for and provide sources.
The question for a med spa becomes:
Is your practice providing the information that could make your website one of those sources?
Why Med Spas and Cosmetic Practices Need Pixo AEO Services
Pixo Web Design & Strategy helps businesses adapt their websites for this new generation of search.
Our AEO services go beyond adding a few FAQ questions to an existing website.
Pixo can evaluate how effectively AI and search engines can access and understand your website, identify content and authority gaps, analyze the questions prospective patients are asking, strengthen high-value treatment pages and develop content specifically around the patient research journey.
For med spas and cosmetic practices, that can include:
AI visibility and website accessibility analysis
We evaluate whether important information about your practice, providers and treatments can be readily discovered and understood.
Treatment-specific AEO optimization
We strengthen pages for valuable treatments such as Botox, fillers, Sculptra, Morpheus8, laser treatments, medical weight loss and cosmetic surgery.
Patient question research
We identify the questions prospective patients ask before deciding whether to schedule a consultation.
Comparison content
Botox vs. Dysport.
Filler vs. Sculptra.
Morpheus8 vs. microneedling.
IPL vs. laser resurfacing.
Facelift vs. non-surgical skin tightening.
These are exactly the types of complex comparison questions AI search is designed to help consumers explore.
Provider authority optimization
We help communicate the credentials, expertise and experience that differentiate your providers.
Local AEO
We strengthen the relationship between your treatments, providers, practice and the geographic markets you serve.
Ongoing AEO content
AI search isn't optimized by publishing one page and walking away. Pixo can continually develop authoritative content around the treatments and questions most valuable to your practice.
Your Expertise May Already Exist. AI Just Doesn't Know Enough About It.
That's what makes AEO particularly compelling for established med spas and cosmetic practices.
You may already have:
Hundreds of five-star reviews.
Highly trained providers.
Thousands of successful treatments.
Beautiful before-and-after results.
Years of experience.
Expensive technology.
A recognizable local brand.
An excellent website.
But if the information AI needs to understand that expertise isn't clearly represented online, much of that authority remains disconnected from AI search.
Pixo helps bridge that gap.
Is AI Recommending Your Practice—or Your Competitor?
Imagine two med spas located a few miles apart.
Both have highly qualified injectors.
Both have hundreds of positive reviews.
Both offer Botox, Dysport, fillers and Sculptra.
Both have beautiful websites.
But Practice A has several short treatment pages and an online booking button.
Practice B thoroughly answers patient questions, compares treatment options, establishes provider credentials, explains candidacy and recovery, demonstrates expertise and clearly connects its providers and treatments to its local market.
Now someone asks Google AI or ChatGPT:
“I'm 48 and losing volume in my face. Should I consider filler or Sculptra, and how do I find a qualified provider near me?”
Which practice has provided more useful information for an AI system to understand and potentially reference?
That's the visibility gap Pixo AEO services are designed to address.
Get a Pixo Med Spa & Cosmetic AEO Audit
Pixo's random audit of 50 Utah med spa and cosmetic websites found that only 42% demonstrated what we considered a strong overall AEO foundation.
That means there is still significant room for practices to establish an early competitive advantage in AI search.
The aesthetics industry is especially well positioned for AEO because patients ask detailed questions, compare treatments, research providers and spend significant time evaluating their options before scheduling.
Your prospective patients are already asking AI questions about the treatments you provide.
The question is whether Google AI and ChatGPT are finding the answers on your website—or your competitor's.
Pixo Web Design & Strategy can analyze your existing website, identify your AI visibility and AEO opportunities, and develop a strategy designed to increase your authority across both traditional and AI-powered search.
