We Audited 50 Utah Dentist Websites for AI Search: Here’s What We Found and Why Dentists Need AEO
Pixo Web Design & Strategy randomly audited 50 dental practice websites across Utah to answer a simple question: Are dentist websites prepared to be found and understood by AI-powered search engines such as Google AI and ChatGPT?
The results revealed a significant opportunity for dental practices.
Of the 50 Utah dentist websites Pixo reviewed, **36 websites—or 72%—provided substantial website content that could be cleanly retrieved during our analysis. However, 14 of the 50 websites—28%—produced significant crawl or content-extraction warnings, including retrieval problems or pages that provided little useful text.
Even more important, being accessible didn't necessarily mean being optimized for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).
Among the dental websites that were readily accessible, relatively few appeared intentionally designed to answer the detailed questions patients are increasingly asking AI.
In other words, many Utah dentists have websites that can be found, but far fewer have websites positioned to become the answer.
What Our Audit of 50 Utah Dental Websites Found
Pixo reviewed a random sample of dental practice websites across Utah, including practices in Utah County, Salt Lake County, Davis County, Ogden and St. George.
Our analysis looked beyond whether a dentist simply had a modern website. We considered whether the site clearly communicated information that search engines and AI platforms could use to understand the practice, including:
-
Dental services and procedures
-
Dentist names, qualifications and expertise
-
Practice locations and communities served
-
Detailed treatment information
-
Common patient questions
-
Educational content demonstrating expertise
-
Information that could help an AI system distinguish one dental practice from another
The biggest takeaway wasn't that Utah dentists have bad websites. Many don't.
The problem is that most dental websites were designed for the previous generation of search.
Traditional dental websites were built around searches such as:
“dentist Salt Lake City”
“dental implants near me”
“emergency dentist”
“cosmetic dentist Utah”
Those searches remain extremely important. But today's patient can ask something much more specific:
“Who is a good dental implant dentist near me for someone with significant bone loss?”
“What is the difference between All-on-4 and traditional dental implants?”
“How much should I expect to pay for dental implants in Utah?”
“Should I get Invisalign or veneers to improve my smile?”
“What should I do if I break a tooth on Sunday?”
Google itself says people using its AI search experiences are asking “longer and more specific questions” and using follow-up questions to explore subjects more deeply.
That fundamentally expands what a dental website needs to accomplish.
The Dental Websites That Stood Out
Some Utah dental websites in our audit already demonstrate several characteristics that can create a stronger foundation for AI search.
For example, Young Family Dental provides substantial information for its Orem location, including the practice location, hours, insurance information and numerous individual dental services.
Hoopes Dental in Ogden provides extensive treatment information along with information about its dentists and their backgrounds. Its website covers numerous specific areas of dentistry rather than relying on one generic services page.
Fairfield Dental in Layton similarly provides extensive information about treatments, providers and specialized areas of dentistry.
These sites aren't automatically guaranteed to appear in an AI-generated recommendation. No legitimate AEO company can promise that.
What they demonstrate is something more fundamental:
The more clearly a dental practice communicates its services, expertise, location and knowledge, the more information search engines and AI systems have available to understand the practice.
That's becoming increasingly important.
Google Search Is Becoming an Answer Engine
Dentists shouldn't think of AEO as something that only matters to ChatGPT.
Google itself is becoming increasingly AI-driven.
Google now prominently incorporates AI Overviews and AI Mode into Search and has published specific guidance for website owners about succeeding in these generative AI experiences.
In 2026, Google reiterated that people are increasingly moving toward generative AI experiences to find information and that website owners have new opportunities to reach those users.
Google also makes something else clear: SEO isn't going away.
Google says:
“The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant.”
That's why Pixo approaches AEO as an extension of good SEO rather than a replacement for it.
Your dental practice still needs to rank.
But now it also needs to provide the kind of authoritative, useful information that can support AI-generated answers.
ChatGPT Can Search for Dental Practices Too
The change isn't limited to Google.
ChatGPT can search the web, provide current information and cite the websites it uses as sources.
OpenAI specifically tells website owners that public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and recommends allowing its search crawler so content can be “discovered, surfaced, and clearly cited and linked.”
That creates an entirely new search environment for dentists.
A prospective patient doesn't necessarily have to search Google for:
“implant dentist Sandy Utah.”
The patient can ask:
“I'm 62 and need several teeth replaced. What are my options besides dentures, and what type of dentist should I look for near Sandy, Utah?”
AI can research that question, explain the options and provide sources.
For dental practices, the marketing question becomes obvious:
Will your website be one of those sources—or will your competitor's?
Dentistry Is Almost Perfectly Suited for AEO
Dentistry has an unusually important advantage when it comes to Answer Engine Optimization:
Patients have questions. Lots of them.
Consider a prospective dental implant patient.
Before scheduling a consultation, that person may want to know:
-
How much do dental implants cost?
-
Does dental insurance pay for implants?
-
How long do implants last?
-
Does getting an implant hurt?
-
Am I too old for dental implants?
-
Can I get implants if I have bone loss?
-
What is All-on-4?
-
Are permanent dentures actually permanent?
-
How long does implant surgery take?
-
How long will I be without teeth?
-
Implant vs. bridge: which is better?
-
How do I choose a good implant dentist?
-
Who is the best implant dentist near me?
Every one of those questions represents a potential search opportunity.
And the opportunity isn't limited to implants.
The same applies to Invisalign, veneers, crowns, dentures, wisdom teeth, root canals, sedation dentistry, emergency dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and virtually every significant dental procedure.
A Service Page Is No Longer Enough
Suppose your dental practice offers implants.
You have a page called “Dental Implants.”
It says that implants are a great way to replace missing teeth, explains the procedure briefly and ends with:
Schedule Your Consultation Today.
That's useful.
But hundreds or thousands of dental websites say essentially the same thing.
Why should an AI system consider your website particularly useful when answering a detailed question about dental implants?
That's where AEO becomes important.
Your website should demonstrate what your practice actually knows.
Who performs your implant procedures?
What training does that dentist have?
How much implant experience does the practice have?
What types of implants do you provide?
Do you perform bone grafting?
Who is a candidate?
What alternatives do you recommend?
What questions do your patients repeatedly ask?
What should patients know before choosing an implant dentist?
Those answers transform a website from a digital brochure into an authoritative dental resource.
AI Search Rewards the Thing Great Dentists Already Have: Expertise
This may be one of the biggest opportunities for established dental practices.
Your dentists may have 10, 20 or 30 years of clinical experience.
They've answered thousands of patient questions.
They know which treatments work well for particular situations.
They understand the misconceptions patients have.
They can explain complicated procedures in ways that reassure patients.
Yet very little of that expertise may exist on the website.
From an AEO perspective, that's wasted authority.
Pixo helps turn that real-world knowledge into useful online content that better establishes who the dentist is, what the dentist knows and which questions the practice is qualified to answer.
Google specifically recommends creating “unique, non-commodity content” for its AI search experiences.
Generic dental copy isn't enough.
Your expertise is what makes the content unique.
Why Dental Practices Need Pixo AEO Services
Pixo's AEO services are designed to close the gap between having a website and having a website prepared for the new AI-driven search environment.
We analyze how search engines and AI platforms can access and understand your existing website.
Then we identify opportunities to strengthen the information that establishes your dental practice as an authoritative source.
That can include improving high-value treatment pages, identifying unanswered patient questions, developing authoritative educational content, strengthening dentist biographies and credentials, improving local relevance, organizing content around specific procedures and patient needs, and making sure important information is readily understandable to search engines and AI platforms.
We can also identify areas where your competitors are providing better answers than you are.
Most importantly, Pixo combines AEO with traditional SEO.
Because the objective isn't simply to show up in ChatGPT.
It's to increase your practice's visibility wherever patients are searching.
The Dental Practices That Move Early Have an Advantage
Our audit of 50 Utah dental websites showed something important.
Most dental practices aren't starting from zero.
Many already have good websites. They have service pages. They have experienced dentists. They have patient reviews. Some have invested significantly in SEO.
What many haven't done yet is adapt all of those assets for the way AI changes search.
That's the opportunity.
There was a time when simply having a dental website created an advantage.
Then ranking well on Google became the advantage.
Then local SEO and Google Maps became essential.
AI search is the next evolution.
Google now says its generative AI search experiences represent “new opportunities” for website owners. Google has even begun testing dedicated Search Console reporting specifically for visibility within AI Overviews, AI Mode and other generative AI features.
This isn't a theoretical future version of search.
It's already happening.
Is AI Finding Your Dental Practice—or Your Competitor?
Imagine two dental practices five miles apart.
Both have excellent dentists.
Both have hundreds of five-star reviews.
Both provide dental implants.
Both have attractive websites.
But one practice has a traditional implant page containing 500 words of generic information.
The other has built a library of useful information answering the dozens of questions prospective implant patients actually ask. Its dentists' experience and credentials are clearly established. Its procedures are thoroughly explained. Its local relevance is clear. And its website is structured so that search engines and AI platforms can readily understand all of that information.
When a patient asks an AI system for help choosing an implant dentist, which practice has provided more evidence that it deserves to be part of the answer?
That's the problem Pixo AEO is designed to solve.
