We Randomly Audited 50 Utah Law Firm Websites: The Results Show Why Law Firms Need AEO
PIXO randomly selected and audited 50 Utah law firm websites to determine whether they were visible to AI platforms and optimized for answer engine optimization, or AEO.
The results uncovered a significant gap.
Most of the websites were technically accessible to search engines and AI systems. Far fewer were structured to become trusted sources in answers generated by ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI-powered platforms.
That matters because potential clients are increasingly asking these platforms questions such as:
-
Who is the best personal injury lawyer near me?
-
How does child custody work in Utah?
-
What should I do after being charged with a DUI?
-
Can I recover damages if I was partly responsible for an accident?
-
When should I hire a business attorney?
If an AI platform cannot easily find, understand, and trust a law firm’s content, that firm may be excluded from the answer—and from the client’s shortlist.
Key Findings From Our Audit of 50 Utah Law Firm Websites
We reviewed firms practicing personal injury, family law, criminal defense, business law, estate planning, and other areas.
Each site was evaluated for two broad categories:
-
Whether search and AI systems could access and understand the website
-
Whether the content was organized to answer prospective clients’ questions
Here is what we found:
-
45 of 50 homepages returned normal, usable website content.
-
Five sites returned access-denied responses and required further testing.
-
45 sites had a discoverable or declared website map.
-
35 provided recognizable business or legal-service information in a machine-readable format.
-
Only 17 used question-based headings reflecting how clients search.
-
Only nine displayed clear FAQ signals on their homepages.
-
The average technical visibility score was 89 out of 100.
-
The average AEO readiness score was only 47 out of 100.
-
26 firms received a Strong overall rating.
-
13 rated Good.
-
Four were classified as Needs Improvement.
-
Seven rated Poor.
The conclusion was clear: most of the law firm websites could be reached, but many were not presenting their expertise in a format designed for modern answer engines.
They were online—but they were not necessarily becoming the answer.
Why This Matters to Law Firms
Prospective clients are already using AI to understand legal problems and identify attorneys.
According to Clio’s 2025 Legal Trends Report, 54% of consumers would use an internet search to find their next lawyer, while 45% would consult a law firm website. Clio also reports that most consumers have used or would consider using AI to answer legal questions.
Among consumers who had used AI for a legal question, half received an answer, while more than a quarter were directed to contact a lawyer.
This creates a new client journey.
A potential client may:
-
Ask ChatGPT what kind of lawyer handles the problem.
-
Use Google’s AI results to learn about possible remedies.
-
Ask Perplexity to identify relevant local law firms.
-
Visit only the two or three firms referenced in those answers.
-
Contact the firm whose website provides the clearest evidence of experience and trustworthiness.
A law firm excluded from the first three steps may never receive the opportunity to compete in the fourth or fifth.
SEO Gets You Ranked. AEO Helps You Become the Answer.
Traditional search engine optimization remains essential. Law firms still need well-built websites, accurate local information, relevant practice-area pages, useful content, reputable links, and strong search performance.
But search behavior is expanding beyond ranked lists of links.
Answer platforms synthesize information. They attempt to understand a question, find relevant evidence, and present a direct response. Some also recommend sources or businesses that can help the user take the next step.
A page might rank for “Utah divorce lawyer” without clearly answering:
-
How long does a Utah divorce take?
-
How is marital property divided?
-
Can a parent move out of state with a child?
-
What happens to a family-owned business?
-
When should someone speak with an attorney?
AEO helps close that gap.
It organizes a law firm’s expertise around the language, questions, and decisions of prospective clients.
Why Law Firms Need PIXO’s AEO Services
Lawyers possess the knowledge that clients and answer platforms are looking for. The challenge is turning that knowledge into an online presence that can be discovered, understood, trusted, and acted upon.
PIXO combines SEO, AEO, content strategy, and conversion optimization into one practical marketing system.
The objective is not simply to produce more content. It is to create the right content, organize it effectively, and connect it to measurable business goals.
PIXO identifies where your firm is invisible
A website can look polished while still presenting serious visibility problems.
PIXO evaluates whether search and answer platforms can reach the site, understand its services, identify its attorneys, connect it to relevant locations, and extract useful answers from its content.
We identify gaps such as:
-
Important pages that are difficult to discover
-
Security settings that may interfere with legitimate platforms
-
Unclear practice-area positioning
-
Missing or inconsistent attorney and location information
-
Thin or repetitive content
-
Unanswered client questions
-
Weak connections among related pages
-
Content lacking Utah-specific or jurisdiction-specific context
This gives the firm a prioritized strategy instead of a generic SEO checklist.
PIXO turns client questions into business-development content
The most effective AEO content begins with genuine client concerns.
A lawyer may describe a matter using terms such as comparative negligence, equitable distribution, or unlawful detainer. A potential client is more likely to ask:
-
Can I recover money if I was partly at fault?
-
Can my spouse take half of my business?
-
How quickly can a landlord remove me?
-
Will I lose custody if I move?
-
Do I need a lawyer before speaking to the insurance company?
PIXO helps translate the firm’s legal knowledge into clear, attorney-reviewed answers without oversimplifying the law.
Each answer can guide readers toward the relevant attorney, service, resource, or consultation.
PIXO strengthens the signals that build trust
Legal content is different from ordinary marketing content. Accuracy, jurisdiction, authorship, and professional accountability matter.
PIXO helps firms establish those signals by clearly connecting content to:
-
Qualified attorneys
-
Relevant practice areas
-
The applicable jurisdiction
-
Reliable primary sources
-
Published and updated dates
-
Attorney biographies and credentials
-
Supporting pages and resources
-
Appropriate legal disclaimers
The goal is to make it evident who is responsible for the information and why that person or firm is qualified to provide it.
PIXO builds Utah-specific relevance
Generic legal articles compete with thousands of similar pages nationwide.
A well-developed Utah resource can explain the law, deadlines, procedures, courts, and practical considerations that affect a local client.
That local specificity gives prospective clients more useful information. It also gives answer platforms a stronger reason to consider the firm when responding to a Utah-focused question.
PIXO can develop this relevance across:
-
Practice-area pages
-
City and office pages
-
Attorney biographies
-
Frequently asked questions
-
Legal guides
-
Blog articles
-
Case-result content
-
Video and transcript content
PIXO connects visibility to conversion
Being mentioned in an AI answer has little business value if the law firm’s website fails to convert the resulting visitor.
PIXO combines AEO with conversion optimization so that users can quickly understand:
-
Whether the firm handles their problem
-
Why the firm is qualified
-
Where the firm practices
-
What the next step involves
-
How to request help
-
What they should expect after making contact
Calls to action, consultation forms, mobile usability, trust signals, attorney introductions, and page structure all contribute to whether visibility produces a qualified lead.
AEO Does Not Mean Replacing Lawyers With AI
AEO is not about allowing a chatbot to practice law.
It does not require a firm to publish automated legal advice or replace attorney judgment with generic AI-generated content.
Effective law firm AEO does the opposite: it gives AI systems and prospective clients better access to accurate, attributable, attorney-reviewed information.
A strong page can explain general legal principles, highlight important exceptions, identify when professional help may be necessary, and guide the reader toward a consultation.
The lawyer remains the authority. AEO makes that authority easier to find.
Law Firms Can Control How AI Platforms Access Their Content
Search visibility and AI model development are not always the same thing.
Some platforms provide separate controls for search discovery, user-requested page visits, and model training. A law firm can therefore make a deliberate choice about where its content may appear.
For example, Perplexity recommends allowing its search crawler so a website can be surfaced in results. Google explains that its Google-Extended control does not affect ordinary Google Search inclusion. OpenAI also distinguishes between its search system, user-requested page visits, and its model-development crawler.
This is why PIXO evaluates AI visibility as a strategy—not as a simple choice between allowing or blocking “AI.”
Firms should understand which services they permit, which they restrict, and whether their website security unintentionally prevents valuable discovery.
AEO Improvements Also Help Human Visitors
Many of the most valuable AEO improvements are simply good communication.
Clear headings make a page easier to scan. Direct answers reduce frustration. Attorney attribution supports trust. Local examples make information relevant. Thoughtful internal links guide visitors to the next appropriate resource.
These improvements can contribute to:
-
More qualified inquiries
-
Higher website conversion rates
-
Better traditional search visibility
-
Stronger practice-area authority
-
More useful attorney profiles
-
Greater visibility across AI platforms
-
A more credible digital brand
AEO should not be approached as a collection of technical tricks. It is the process of turning a law firm’s expertise into useful information that both people and modern discovery platforms can understand.
Will Your Law Firm Be Part of the Answer?
Our audit of 50 Utah law firm websites found that most firms had achieved basic technical visibility. Far fewer had fully adapted their content for answer-based discovery.
That gap creates an opportunity.
Law firms that act now can establish stronger subject-matter and local authority before AI search becomes as competitive as traditional legal SEO.
PIXO helps law firms:
-
Audit their visibility across search and AI platforms
-
Identify technical and content barriers
-
Develop an AEO strategy around profitable practice areas
-
Create clear, attorney-reviewed answers
-
Strengthen local and jurisdictional relevance
-
Improve attorney, service, and location information
-
Connect visibility to consultation requests
-
Monitor results and adapt as platforms change
Your attorneys already have the knowledge prospective clients need.
PIXO helps make that knowledge visible when clients—and the platforms guiding them—are looking for answers.
