I'm forced to write this post. I've heard it come up more than once by supposed search engine optimization (SEO) experts/gurus/professionals and it drives me crazy! The scenario is something like this: Potential client is wisely meeting with different agencies to get website development work and/or search engine optimization work done. They narrow down to whom they want to work with to Pixo and another agency. The other agency meets with the potential client to make their final pitch and tells the client that if they don’t use the Wordpress content management system for their website then their website will never rank well in Google. Concerned client comes back to us and says, “We love what you showed us about Concrete5. It seems so easy to use and it will work perfect for what we want to do over the long haul online, but we are concerned that our website won’t rank if we don’t use Wordpress.” (Learn how to optimize a Concrete5 website here)

Interesting development and one more reason to make your website mobile-friendly. Google is now giving sites a mobile-friendly tag in mobile search results to help users find sites that will be easy to view on their mobile devices like the example you see below.
Eleven years ago this month we started Pixo with a vision of creating websites for small to medium sized businesses that were both powerful, flexible and easy to use. Eleven years later we still have that vision. It is fun to look back over the years and see what we are doing now verses the "early days." What we did in those early years was totally innovative, but by today's standards things have come a long ways in a very short time.
We've know if for almost six years now and more than once the public has voted the same. The Concrete5 was honored today with being the winner of the 2014 People's Choice CMS Award for Best Free PHP CMS. CMS critic stated, "Concrete5 has proved itself a tough contender in recent years and with this win over the incredibly popular Joomla, have positioned themselves well as a major player in the free CMS space." Sometimes you've got to have some fun! What better time than Halloween? We took the Pixo 1,300 pound giant pumpkin and the 511 pound carved pumpkin commissioned by Skype and amused the local Trick-or-treaters. Okay, I think we were the ones that were more amused. Have a good laugh and enjoy!
Sometimes I see a beautiful new website design mockup and it almost makes me sick. Graphically it is typically very pleasing but I see things as web designer that I instantly recognize as being un-needfully complex and design features that will possibly make the website less flexible for the client down the road. Often these designs are done by former print designers turned "web designer" who are very talented in the use of color and illustration but because they don't know code they do things in such a way that it sometimes ends up costing the client down the road.
Microsoft no longer supports Microsoft Frontpage and as a result many website owners that relied on the Frontpage Extensions have websites that will no longer work going forward. Many people liked Frontpage because it put them in control of their website. They could add content and create new pages relatively easily with Frontpage. However these days there are better options. Content management systems like Concrete5 give a site owner just as much control over their website but a whole lot more functionality in a very easy to use package.
The much anticipated release of Concrete5 content management system version 5.7.0 is now available. This version is the largest release by the Concrete5 team since 5.5. New interfaces, new tools and some pretty slick functional changes come with this big release. So is it time for you to upgrade?

For those who don’t know, I grow giant pumpkins during the summer in my free-time. These aren’t your ordinary Halloween, jack-o-lantern pumpkins but the ones you see on the news that are over 1,000 pounds. Over the years we’ve had a lot of fun with the pumpkins including being on TV with Jerry Seinfeld, Ricky Gervais, and Juliann Moore talking about the pumpkin. Being quoted about the pumpkins in National Geographic. And more newspaper articles and photos than I can remember.
One of the things that has always fascinated me is the complexity of growing a giant pumpkin. My largest pumpkin was last year at 1,220 pounds. At its peak, it was putting on 43lbs a day. It takes a number of hours to grow something that big and even with the best laid plans and hard work things don’t always work at as you would like.
Are you getting dozens of emails a day from your Concrete5 forms and is it driving you crazy? You aren't the only ones. We've seen a big increase in the number of spambots auto submitting online forms of all types (not just Concrete5 forms) this year. Spambots crawl the internet looking for online forms and when it finds one it fills out the form and submits it. It can be really aggravating getting constant junk offers or gibberish submissions from the online forms with no noticeable way of stopping it. Turning on the Concrete5 captcha will slow down many of those spambots but the problem with a captcha is that it can deter potential customers from filling out the forms because it can sometimes be hard to read the letters and numbers that are in the forms so users just give up.
Are you getting tired of email spam or looking for other email options for your growing business? Have you considered Google Apps for Work?
Google Apps for Work is a cloud-based productivity suite that includes Gmail for professional email, Drive for online storage, Hangouts for video meetings, Calendar for scheduling and Docs for editing files. Think of Google Apps as a less expensive alternative to Exchange Server with the ability to greatly reduce the amount of spam that hits your inbox. And Google Apps is completely compatible with Outlook and Mac Mail so you can continue to use your favorite email software.

Start up businesses or established companies with a new product often times will turn to Kickstart to build funding or to market a new product. Kickstart is a wonderful way to promote a new product to an eager audience looking for a deal, latest technology or service. However you should establish your website long before you start your Kickstart campaign to build momentum into the campaign for the best chance at success.
I can't count how many times we've taken a Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla website and turned it into a Concrete5 website. For many users those before mentioned content management systems just doesn't meet the user's needs. Usually the problem is that for some users, the editing tools just aren't intuitive enough to use and the website owner wants to more easily be able to make edits and add products to their website in a simple but powerful way.
Google+, Google's social media equivalent to Facebook, has had a meteoric rise in the number of users over the last year. We've been telling our clients that they need to be on Google+ for the last two years, because we saw a trend and statements from the Executives at Google that told us that if you wanted your website to rank well in the search engine results then Google+ is where you needed to be now.
This is one of those simple little things that can turn a good website into a great website. Get a slideshow on your homepage that not only makes your page more visually appealing but also becomes a navigation piece for your users that can increase coversions. An attractive slideshow with call to action buttons in the design is a great way to get users to go where you want them to go and also forces you to have a clear marketing message in your slideshow. Too many sites we see that have a nice looking slideshow but doesn't have a strong message in it or a prompt to tell your user to do something.
For five years Disney has put on the invite only Disney Social Moms event at one of its park. We were invited the previous two years but were not able to attend because of scheduling conflicts. This year we made it a point to attend and it did not disappoint.
We've worked with Disney on a couple of previous park opening adventures which were just fantastic opportunities for us. Social moms had everything that those events had plus a great opportunity to learn from some of the leading thinkers of our day. Not to mention it is a real treat when Disney shuts down an entire section of the park for you so you can enjoy the rides without almost no lines. Who else has gone to Cars Land and after concluding Radiator Springs Racers were given the opportunity to just stay on the ride because nobody else was in line?
Disneyland has fully embraced the mom community. Some may say that an event like this one is self-serving but to those who understand that community the concept is brilliant. Invite 150 mom influencers to learn about everything Disneyland for four days and at the same time create deep ties to the community. Disneyland understands that moms listen to other moms in the social media realms, that moms on average control 85% of the household spending and moms make the majority of travel plan decisions for a family. Why not work with influential moms and create awareness at the same time?!
One of Pixo's websites is milehighmamas.com. It is the top mom community website in Colorado where the top mommy bloggers share ideas with other moms and have a lot of fun together. One of the interesting things we have found and research has proven over the years is how much trust moms put into each other. It is wonderful. They love to talk about brands, share product reviews, favorite recipies and other ideas through social media and their own blogs. They are a true force to be reckoned with because they control 85% of the household income on average and they know how to band together when there has been an injustice. We have watched more than one company be brought to its knees when mom influencers who have seen something not right in the business world and band together to go after a brand. It is democracy and social media at its best!
A new version of Concrete5 is now available. Version 5.6.3 contains the following new features and improvements. This is a relatively minor release but one that most website owners should upgrade to for the added security benefits.
Everyone wants to get an edge when it comes to having a great website. There isn't a one size fits all formula when it comes to creating a great website design that increases your sales but there are 7 things that every good Concrete5 theme should have. The following is a great checklist to help you determine if your website design is meeting its full potential.
A release candidate for the next major version of concrete5 is now available! That means a stable version of the new Concrete5 should be available in the next two weeks. In addition to better password security, this release fixes many bugs and includes language files, meaning you no longer need to download them separately to install concrete5 in a language other than English.
We've been saying for nearly two years now that if you want your website to rank well in the future on Google you have to start doing social media optimization now. We have seen where Google has been heading for a while now and telling our clients that social media is going to become more and more important for them going forward. Just three weeks ago Google's John Muller hinted that is the case when he said, "We use many signals. Links aren't necessarily the most important thing on the web."
Have you ever wondered how many more clicks someone that ranks position #1 on page #1 on Google? Here are some interesting facts:
One of the things we do early on with a new search engine optimization (SEO) client is help them develop a list of keywords that they would want to optimize for their website. Usually we keep the list to around 15-20 keywords to start with. The list of SEO keywords are the words/phrases that we want the site to come up for in Google, Yahoo and Bing when a user does a search. For some sites this isn't as easy as one would think.
We were recently contacted by a company in Boulder, Colorado who was in a real pinch. His current website vendor, who was one of those "build your own website services," wasn't working (literally) and he was in great need of getting a website that would work for his needs going forward. The catch is that he needed a new eCommerce website built yesterday. Literally. We came together as a team, come up with a plan and had a responsive, eCommerce website up and running for him two days later with all of the website content migrated over and payment gateways fully running.
